Any gift that comes from the heart will suffice. Popular Mothers Day gifts include flowers, dinner out, and candles. But there are plenty of choices available.

Flowers for Mother's Day

When choosing Mothers Day flowers, get a nice arrangement and bouquet. This is one time running by your local grocery store the night before and choosing a bouquet of whatever is on sale is not going to do. Pick a beautiful bouquet in a nice vase and have the Mothers Day flowers delivered to Mom. Mothers love having flowers delivered that are arranged and in a lovely vase.

Candles make a good Mothers Day gift. Choose soy candles that burn all the way to the end and that have a pleasant fragrance that you know Mom enjoys. She has had to smell dirty laundry and smelly gym socks for many years. Make up for that by giving her the gift of "good scents."

Gift Cards for Mother's Day

You can give Mom a gift card, but there are two things to remember. One is that you had best ensure that you have given her a gift card to somewhere she shops. If she loves reading, then a gift card to the local bookstore is perfectly appropriate. After all, you certainly don't know every book that she owns or has read. The second thing to remember is that the gift card needs to be in a nice card with a handwritten message. Mom needs to know that you have put some thought into her Mothers Day presents.

Mothers Day Perfume

Another good choice is perfume. Some Moms wear perfume everyday; other Moms only wear perfume on special occasions. Whatever type of Mom you have, she is sure to appreciate a bottle of perfume. If you are unsure as to what type of perfume she wears, look on her dresser or vanity. If that still does not help, stick to buying Mom a classic such as Chanel or Joy.

Mother's Day Dinner

One of the best gifts for Mothers Day you can give is the gift of not cooking. How many meals do you think Mom has cooked for you? If Mom has cooked at least 300 meals out of 365 days and you are at least 18 years of age, then your Mom has cooked over 5,400 meals for you already. Treat her to a gourmet meal prepared by a professional chef. DineWise is the newest trend in personal gourmet meals. Send Mom a gourmet meal for two, dress as a waiter and serve it to her and Dad. She will be amazed at your taste.

Luxury Mothers Day Gifts

How about giving a Mother's Day gift that reeks of luxury? Even if you can't afford a Coach purse for Mom, or a piece from the Michael Kors collection, there are still affordable things carried by each shop that you can gift Mom. Coach carries a selection of wallets that are priced under forty dollars and Michael Kors carries several accessory items that can fit any budget. In fact, all designers usually carry several inexpensive accessories to meet every budget.

The Tradition of Mothers Day

Did you know that the tradition of giving gifts for Mothers Day goes as far back as the ancient Egyptians who offered "mothering gifts" to the goddess Isis, the mother of all pharaohs? In the 1600s, the clergy in England created "Mothering Day" which honored both mothers and the Mother Church. This holiday fell during Lent and allowed a break from Lent where a large feast was prepared in honor of the mothers.

When the Puritans settled America, Mothering Day was ended, as it did not fit in with their ideals and beliefs. It wasn't until almost 200 years later that the idea of Mother's Day would become known in America. Julia Ward Howe, who wrote "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" was so upset over the deaths of men during the Civil War that she called upon all mothers to join together and protest the Civil War. Howe paid the bill for various cities to fund Mother's Day for the next 12 years, but once she stopped paying, the cities stopped celebrating.

In 1908, a woman by the name of Anna M. Jarvis petitioned for the creation of Mother's Day, both to honor her mother and to honor the idea of peace. After endless years campaigning, Woodrow Wilson signed Mother's Day into observance in 1914.

The first few official Mother's Day celebrations were low-key affairs that were marked by the giving of flowers to mothers, a tradition that continues to this day. Here are some of my favorite

Son giving his Mom Flowers and a Mothers Day Gift
If you are the spouse, you are responsible for purchasing the gifts for Mothers Day until the children are old enough to purchase them on their own. Even after the children are grown and out of the house, it is still a good idea for the spouse to offer the Mother a token of esteem, just to say, "Thank you for giving birth to my children and helping raise them."
